Pavers are one of the better-performing hardscape surfaces in a freeze-thaw climate, provided the installation is built for it.
Why they handle movement well
Flexible joints let individual units shift slightly with the ground rather than cracking. That flexibility is exactly what a rigid poured surface lacks.
Drainage is the deciding factor
Water that cannot escape freezes, expands and lifts. A winter-ready installation grades water away from the house, uses free-draining base material and keeps joints properly filled.
Salt and de-icers
Use products appropriate for concrete and stone surfaces and avoid aggressive de-icers on new installations. Sealing can add protection depending on the material.
